[Frequently Asked Questions]
Q:Do I have to try out to make the team?
A: Yes, tryouts are held at the beginning of the fall semester.
Q: How many riders are on the team?
A: 20
Q: What if I do not make the team?
A: If you do not make the team, we encourage you to still join our club
and participate in meetings and other club functions. You may also take private
lessons with our coach.
Q: Do I need my own horse?
A: No, the team supplies the horses.
Q: Do I have to be a great rider?
A: All levels of riders are welcome. Our riders range in ability from
first year beginners to seasoned competitors.
Q: What are the required time commitments?
A: One lesson a week as well as attendance at bi-weekly meetings
(Thursday nights), shows, and other club functions.
Q: What costs are involved?
A: You will be responsible for your lesson fees, currently $250-$300 per
semester, entry fees for competitions, and other expenses such as travel, food,
and hotel. Lesson fees are to be paid in full at the beginning of each
semester. If you cannot afford to pay at that time, you are allowed to
post-date checks, but we must have a check for each month of lessons at the
beginning of each semester. We do hold fundraisers to minimize show/travel
cost.
Q: What if I do not have proper show
attire?
A: You will have to buy your own helmet, boots, black gloves, and
breeches. You can borrow coats and show shirts from other team members.
Q: What do we wear to lessons?
A: Riders are required to wear tall boots, polo shirts, breeches, and a
belt to all lessons. Chaps, jeans, and paddock boots are not acceptable, but if
that is all you have, you will be given a 30 day grace period. Riders who show
up to lessons in incorrect attire will receive demerits. All riders must wear
hard hats when mounted.
Q: May I bring my own horse to school?
A: Yes. There are many student owned horses which are boarded at BREC
Farr Horse Activity Center. If you interested in doing so, please contact BREC
as soon as possible, since boarding stalls are very limited.
Q: May I bring my own saddle?
A: Yes, but you may not always be allowed to use it. You are not allowed
to use your own tack at shows, so you must learn to adjust to different
saddles.
