[Tryout Information]

Welcome from the Equestrian Club at LSU. We are glad that you have shown an interest in trying out for our team. We hope that you enjoy tryouts and that you do your best. The goal of our team is to have fun and to learn about horses.

Let me begin by telling you about our club. The club has been in existence for six years. We participate in Intercollegiate Horse Show Association sponsored shows, competing against other schools in our region, both varsity and non-varsity teams. Varsity teams are those who receive financial support from the university; non-varsity teams are those who do not receive any financial support from their sponsoring university. LSU is a non-varsity team and relies on fundraisers and fees to defray some of the costs of showing. This is a disadvantage for non-varsity teams but thus far, we have been successful in competing against varsity teams.

<>Competing in IHSA shows involves traveling to the host school, drawing a horse’s name, and riding that horse to the best of your ability. You are not allowed any warm up and cannot use your own tack or horse. You must rely on what you saw of the horses earlier that morning during warm up and comments from you teammates who have ridden that horse before. It is the epitome of “catch riding.”

This competition is challenging, but exciting. You are expected to ride equitation on a horse that you have never ridden. It is a team sport in which you earn points for your team as well as individually. It is not all work and no play. The camaraderie of the team is great and you get to meet so many different people from other schools. You also bond with your team and make life-long friends.

You will be expected to attend practice on a regular bases. The club will provide the coach and a horse for you to take lessons on. You do not have to own or stable a horse in Baton Rouge to participate.

Hopefully, this information will be helpful in your deliberation to join our team. We are looking for new members who love riding and will be dedicated to our team. We hope you will try out for the Equestrian Club at LSU. Come on out and meet the members of the team, it will be a fun event.
